Envisaged by Western Australian artist Alex Mickle, this sculpture was constructed by the local community for the small mining town of Paraburdoo. ‘Resilience’ is based on a spherical torus shape that some physicists believe best describes the dimensional properties of our universe. The top section is made of stone estimated to be 2.4 billion years old.
Just outside the mining town of Tom Price, there is a lookout on a small hillock. Originally intended for tourists, over the years it has become an informal memorial site used by the town’s residents to remember loved ones who died here since the 1970s. Nobody seems to know when or why this change of purpose started, but standing in the centre of the lookout, surrounded by hundreds of painted rocks and other homemade mini-memorials (including a fridge!) is a poignant, slightly eerie and unique experience.
There are four privately owned rail tracks in the Pilbara region, used for the transport of iron ore. The trains consist of up to 236 wagons with a total length of 2.4 kms weighing approx 30,.00 tonnes.
Located 50km north east of Marble Bar, Coppin Gap was hit by Cyclone Ilsa on April 14, 2023. The category 5 storm destroyed much of its bushland.
Mining in the Pilbara is a 24/7 operation with road trains driving through the night, every night.
