room with a view
Many dwellings in Namara village are in a state of disrepair or have been abandoned.
View from my beach hammock. Although the village had little going for it (no shop, cafe, bar, etc), the beach was good.
Another abandoned dwelling. Many of Wasaya’s residents have been forced to leave the island to find work on Fiji (the ‘mainland’).
Homestay accomodation on the island is cheap, but very basic. This was my bathroom, shared with up to ten people.
During my two-week stay at the homestead, every guest (including myself) experienced mild-moderate food poisoning.
Namara residents take their (Christian) religion very seriously and as they also love to sing, the church choir perform to a remarkable standard.
